Shriners offer financial help to family of burned Loxahatchee boy

MIAMI -- There's a chance the Shriners may provide free medical care for a Loxahatchee boy who was seriously burned last week.
Three-year-old Marcus Conley was burned on his face, hands and leg when he tripped and fell into a bonfire in the backyard of his home in Loxahatchee. He's now hospitalized at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami.  Marcus is almost well enough to go home, but his family may have to deal with hospital bills for a long time, since they have no health insurance. "It's hard, it's hard being strong when there's so much going on you know?" said Natina Conley, the boy's mother.

The Shriners say it's possible Marcus could receive free care at one of the Shriners Burn Hospitals, and more than likely it would be the one in Cincinnati, Ohio.

"It was devastating to hear about it, see it, anytime we have a tragedy, especially for a young child, it's devastating," said Jim Guretzky, Amara Shrine Potentate. The Shriners feel if they can help the parents of a burned child by giving them free medical care, that's a big step. "You know they've got one worry, they're worried about their child, and then the second worry, they're worried about their finances. And it just becomes overwhelming," said Guretzky.

"We want to help the family as much as possible. And of course as you know, there is no charge in the shrine hospitals," said Earle Lowing, Amara Shrine Hospital Chairman.
The parents will have to fill out an application. The Shriners Burn Hospital in Cincinnati will review it and decide if they can help Marcus.

When told about the possibility that the Shriners can help, Natina Conley said: "That is awesome. Just to have somebody offer to help, that's amazing. I'm usually not at a loss for words, but I don't know what to say. I'm flabbergasted."

She says Marcus may get out of the hospital Wednesday or Thursday.
